The data included in Foundations comes from Foundation Center surveys of the nation's largest foundations, foundation web sites and other public reporting, and from the IRS information returns filed annually by all U.S. foundations.

Grants
In 2012 A Subset of the Nation's Largest Foundations Awarded 153,821 grants Totaling $22.4 Billion
Grants shows how 1,000 of the largest U.S. foundations distribute their domestic and international giving to organizations by issue, population, and geographic focus. It includes all of the grants of $10,000 or more awarded by this set of independent, corporate, and grantmaking operating foundations, as well as unrestricted and donor-advised fund grants (when available) for community foundations. Giving by these foundations together accounts for more than half of overall U.S. foundation giving each year. Grant amounts reflect the full authorized value of the grant in the year the grant was made, if this information was provided by the foundation. Otherwise, the grant amount reflects the amount paid in the year it was reported. The data included in Grants comes from direct reporting of grant-level data to the Foundation Center by foundations, foundation web sites and other public reporting, and from the IRS information returns filed annually by all U.S. foundations.
